Films can be of many types like regional, folk, classical, thriller, romantic, horror and comedy, etc. But before telling you the top 5 film industries, we would like to tell you about the Indian Film Industry.

Indian Film Industry

When one speaks of the Indian film industry, it is not just about the Bollywood, some major film industries and along with some regional film industries makes the Indian film industry biggest in the world.

The Indian Film Industry is about 100 years old and its first movie was Raja Harishchandra, which was released in 1913. It was a silent movie. Our Indian film industry is recognized worldwide because of its wonderful movies like Dangal, Bahubali, etc. There are many film industries in India, which could be understood by their language. Such as – Hindi means Bollywood, Tamil means Kollywood Etc. Now, we are going to tell you about the top 5 film industries in India.

Indian film industry produced more than 1800 movies annually. It ranked 3rd in world cinema in 2019, with total gross of around US$2.7 billion. Major center for movie productions are Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Amritsar, Kochi, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati.

1. Bollywood – Hindi Film Industry

Bollywood is also called B-Town. Almost everyone watches Bollywood movies. Every Indian have been watching them since their childhood. Bollywood movies generally are in Hindi only. Its office or the hub is in Mumbai.

There is a diversity in Bollywood movies, which means there are so many kinds of Bollywood movies, such as horror, thriller, romantic, comedy, sci-fi, drama, action, etc. A few best actors in Bollywood are – Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Vicky Kaushal, Aamir khan, etc. And the few best Movies are- Sholey, Dangal, Mother India, etc.

2. Kollywood – Tamil Film Industry

Kollywood is also called K-Town. This is the Tamil Film industry. Its main office or hub is in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is as old as Bollywood and counted as one of the oldest Indian Film industries. This is a great influencer for other film industries also. Many movies of Kollywood are dubbed into other languages to watch, including Hindi. In fact, many movies are the remake of Kollywood movies also.  

The most famous actors in Kollywood are Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan. Kamal Hassan and a great value there. He is said to be the god of Kollywood movies. People of South India Worship him like a god, in fact, they have the status of Rajnikanth in their homes.

3. Tollywood – Telugu Film Industry

Telugu film industry is called Tollywood. Its head office or the hub is in Film Nagar, Hyderabad. It is having the Guinness World Record for having the largest movie production facility around the world, which is famous as Ramoji Film City. Almost every movie has been dubbed or re-released in other languages. Its movies are liked and loved by all Indians. Bahubali is the greatest example of this.

Bahubali is a Tollywood movie and because of this movie, only Tollywood is recognized all over in World. This movie is said to be the highest-earning movie to date.

It has its own fan base. Its recent movie Arjun reddy was a super-duper hit and its remake Kabir Singh was a Bollywood movie and it was also a super hit.

4. Sandalwood – Kannada Film Industry

This is the Kannada film industry. This is based in Bangalore, Karnataka. This industry is also known as Chandanavana, which is the Kannada name for Sandalwood. Its Main and most famous Actors are- dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, and Shankar Nag.

The most recent and world-famous movie of Sandalwood is KGF 1 and KGF Chapter 2, which was dubbed into many languages, such as Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam.  These were the highest-earning movies in the history of Sandalwood and one of the best movies in the Indian Film Industries. And won two National film awards.

5. Mollywood – Malayalam Film Industry

This is the Malayalam language film industry. And this is based in Kerala. Although it has a very less audience, still it has its own space in the Indian Film Industry. Mollywood’s movie My Dear Kuttichathan is the first 3D movie.

Mollywood’s movie Drishyam was a super hit in 2013. The actor in this movie is Mohanlal. It was remade into many languages like Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. And all the translated movies did wonderful at the box office.
